Liturgy and Mass

At St Mary’s School, we know that our faith shapes what we do and how we live our lives. We value the time we come together to reflect on the Gospel and on the topics we are studying during our Religious Education lessons.

On Mondays, we gather together as a whole school to share and reflect on the Gospel reading from Holy Mass the day before.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the Infant and Junior classes come together to reflect on a topic or special date within the liturgical calendar. Each class, leads at least one liturgy each term. The children plan the liturgy and lead the liturgy for their phase. Parents are warmly invited to worship with us.

We also have special liturgies for the whole school and parents for Harvest, Remembrance Day and the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.

Each week all of the children attend an additional hymn practice and liturgy where they practise hymns for upcoming celebrations and also share and reflect on a Gospel reading.

Years 1 to 6 regularly attend Mass together during the year, celebrating the beginning of the school year, the Feast of All saints, the beginning of Advent, the Feast of Immaculate Conception, Ash Wednesday, the Feast of Corpus Christi and the Year 6 Leavers’ Mass. Parents are invited and encouraged to worship with the children at all Masses.

The Growing in Faith Team (16 Junior pupils) prepare the space, read the readings, offer up the prayers of the faithful and take up the offertory. Every member of the school community participates by joining in with all elements of the Mass including the joyful singing of hymns, Mass responses and prayers.

The Orchestra also play their instruments at Mass and create a prayerful atmosphere as we gather and recess.

In addition to whole school Masses, a class of Junior children celebrate Mass at St Mary’s Church, each week, with the wider community in our parish.
